PNG University of Goroka Student Fatally Attacked Following Car Dispute
A student from the PNG University of Goroka has died following a fatal attack in Goroka over the weekend, police confirmed during a press briefing on Monday.
Chief Superintendent John Kale reported that the incident stemmed from a confrontation after a minor traffic accident near the Lahanis area. The victim, a third-year student from Kompiam, had been socialising with friends at Faniufa before the event unfolded.
Following the accident, the other party involved allegedly followed the student’s group to North Goroka, where a fight broke out. One of the assailants is believed to have struck the student on the head with an object, causing his death. The altercation took place late Saturday night.
Police have arrested the main suspect and are holding five others as the investigation progresses. Kale emphasized the event was not linked to any tribal or student-related conflicts, describing it as an isolated criminal matter.
Minister for Higher Education Kinoka Feo expressed sorrow over the tragedy, stating that the country has lost a bright mind. He also acknowledged the University of Goroka SRC’s leadership for urging students to remain calm and allow justice to prevail.
