The rigorous training program includes extensive simulator sessions and classroom instruction, equipping pilots to operate the technologically advanced A220 aircraft. Air Niugini CEO Gary Seddon praised the milestone, saying, “Our pilots’ success in this program reflects our dedication to safety and excellence. From pilots to crew, engineers, and ground staff, we’re ensuring our team meets the same high standards as global carriers.”
The A220 is central to Air Niugini’s fleet modernization efforts, with orders placed for several A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft. The first delivery is expected in September, aligning with Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary. These fuel-efficient jets will replace the airline’s aging Fokker 100/70 fleet on domestic routes and eventually phase out Boeing 737s on international flights, offering enhanced passenger comfort and advanced technology.
As Papua New Guinea marks its golden jubilee, the arrival of the A220 fleet signals a new chapter for Air Niugini. The airline is focused on improving connectivity, boosting economic growth, and delivering top-tier service to passengers across the nation and beyond.
