PNG’s Northern Coastlines on Tsunami Alert Following Russia Earthquake

Residents along the northern coastlines of Papua New Guinea have been placed on high alert following a tsunami warning triggered by a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

The PNG Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazards Management has warned that tsunami waves could impact coastal provinces including Manus Island, New Ireland, New Britain, Bougainville, Madang, East Sepik, and West Sepik between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Wednesday.

The US Geological Survey also reported that potentially destructive waves may strike parts of Russia and Japan within three hours of the quake.

PNG disaster officials are advising residents in affected areas to evacuate to higher ground or move inland and to stay away from beaches and low-lying coastal zones.

Estimated wave heights range from 1 to 3 meters in Manus, Kavieng, Kimbe, Madang, Wewak, and Vanimo, while Rabaul is forecasted to receive waves between 0.3 to 1.0 meters around 5:50 pm.

Authorities are urging people to remain alert and wait for further announcements on when it will be safe to return to coastal areas.
