PNG's Marape Government Criticised Over 2025 LLG Election Postponement
Former Attorney-General Davis Steven has accused the Papua New Guinea Government of failing to uphold its constitutional responsibilities following the postponement of the 2025 Local Level Government elections.
Steven condemned the Electoral Commission’s decision to delay polling after the writs were issued for an extended 80-day campaign. He said the last-minute deferral, citing poor planning and inadequate resources, is unacceptable.
He also criticised the call for the public to focus on Independence Day celebrations instead of elections, calling it inappropriate and dismissive of democratic rights.
Steven urged the relevant Parliamentary Committee and the Ombudsman Commission to investigate the matter urgently. He said such failures weaken the democratic values guaranteed under PNG’s Constitution.
The former Justice Minister warned that failing to conduct elections on time threatens citizens' right to choose their leaders in a free and fair process every five years.
