PNG Government Approves 5G Spectrum to Drive Digital Transformation
Papua New Guinea Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, has announced the release of the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile spectrum, marking a milestone in the country’s digital transformation efforts. The announcement was made yesterday and represents a major step in modernizing the nation’s telecommunications sector.
According to Minister Tsiamalili, the release of the spectrum is the first time in PNG’s history that radio frequency will be allocated using a market-based approach. He said the initiative underscores the Marape-Rosso Government’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure and aligning with international best practices.
The minister confirmed that the 2600 MHz band has been made available for 5G services, which he said will unlock opportunities for innovation, investment, and inclusive economic growth. “Access to fast and reliable Internet and mobile services is essential, therefore the release of the 5G spectrum will support better connectivity and access to the latest wireless technologies,” he stated.
Minister Tsiamalili explained that the development will boost productivity and innovation by enabling digital government services, supporting business and private networks, and improving access to health and education services. He emphasized that 5G technology will play a critical role in improving service delivery across the country.
He also commended the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) for its leadership and extensive engagement with stakeholders in the lead-up to the release. The process, he said, has ensured that the spectrum is allocated fairly and transparently.
The announcement comes after the NICTA Board gave its approval in July 2025. Minister Tsiamalili highlighted that the release of the 5G spectrum is essential for driving mobile broadband growth and introducing next-generation technologies in PNG.
