PNG Leader Calls for Unity in Prayer Ahead of 50th Independence
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has called on the people of PNG to pause in prayer on August 26, National Repentance Day, as the country approaches its golden jubilee of independence.
Addressing crowds on the second day of the Jubilee Reset Gospel Music Festival in Port Moresby, Marape reflected on the nation’s history since 1975, saying PNG has been held together under God’s grace despite its immense cultural and linguistic diversity.

He recalled how founding father Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare declared PNG a Christian nation in 1975 and later formalised National Repentance Day in 2008 to encourage reflection and renewal. Marape said this year’s 50th anniversary was a timely moment to reaffirm those values.
The Prime Minister stressed the role of young men in shaping the country’s future, urging them to stay clear of destructive behaviours such as drugs, alcohol and crime. He said PNG needed youth who are guided by faith and committed to serving their communities.
Marape also urged unity across all church denominations, calling for collective prayer and worship during the national day of repentance. He then joined in a choir performance of the song Awesome God.
The gospel festival officially launched month-long celebrations that will lead up to PNG’s 50th Independence Day on September 16, 2025.
