PNG Prime Minister Marape Challenges God to Remove Him if He Blocks PNG’s Progress

Prime Minister James Marape has publicly asked God to remove him from leadership if his presence hinders Papua New Guinea’s development. Speaking at Sir John Guise Stadium during National Repentance Day, Marape urged divine intervention to appoint a better leader if necessary.

Addressing early-morning worshippers, Marape said: “God of Heaven, if I am a stumbling block to this country’s progress, take this wet blanket and give it to someone better than me.” He appealed to politicians and public servants responsible for a disproportionate share of the national budget to repent and recommit their service to the country.

Marape emphasized that genuine progress requires honesty, humility, and accountability from every leader, member of parliament, local government president, ward councillor, and public servant. He reminded citizens that repentance must be reflected in actions and a transformation of character.

He also took the opportunity to withdraw the curse he had placed against corruption seven years ago, clarifying it was never intended for the nation as a whole. “I revoke the curse I made against corruption,” he told the gathering before Ps Joseph Walters.

The Prime Minister stressed that the day’s theme—“repent, reconcile and reset Papua New Guinea”—is vital for the country’s social and economic progress as it approaches its 50th year of independence.
