PNG’s People’s Reform Party Names Allan Bird as New Leader

Papua New Guinea’s East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has taken over leadership of the People’s Reform Party (PRP), a move seen as reshaping the country’s political landscape.

The announcement was made at Dream Inn, Port Moresby, on Sunday, where PRP founder James Donald confirmed the party’s unanimous decision. “If Allan Bird joins, he leads. It’s about humility and service to the country,” Donald told supporters.

Bird, who had been sitting as an independent MP, said he almost retired from politics but was persuaded otherwise by voters and colleagues. He revealed that five different parties had approached him but he chose PRP because it offered a clean slate.

“The People’s Reform Party ticked all the boxes — no bad political history, a reform agenda, and young principled leadership,” Bird explained.

Established in 2018, PRP entered parliament in 2022 with Donald as its first representative. The handover marks the biggest leadership change since its founding.

In his maiden address as leader, Bird reiterated his call for a “hard reset” in governance. He said corruption and crime were rampant, and reforms must replace empty promises. He also announced PRP would embrace digital platforms to give members and citizens greater participation in party decisions.

Political commentators note that Bird, a two-term governor with national recognition, could elevate PRP’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections, presenting it as a reformist alternative.
