SP PNG Hunters Fall to Seagulls in Brisbane Battle

The SP PNG Hunters were handed a tough defeat on Saturday, going down 32-10 against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in their Round 22 Hostplus Cup clash at BMD Kougari Oval in Brisbane. The loss highlighted the Hunters’ ongoing struggle to match the consistency of the competition’s stronger teams.

The Hunters went into the contest with confidence but found themselves on the back foot early. Wynnum Manly’s Ben Farr opened the scoring in the 7th minute, followed by Liam Sutton’s try before halftime. The Seagulls took a 10-0 lead into the break, leaving the Hunters searching for momentum.

After halftime, the Hunters attempted to regroup, but Wynnum Manly extended their advantage with a flurry of tries from Treymain Spry, Kalolo Saitaua, Cooper Roberts, and Sutton once again. Jock Madden converted four goals to pile further pressure on the visitors, who struggled to hold their defensive line.

The Hunters finally found their breakthrough in the 47th minute when Douglas David crossed over to score, giving the team a glimmer of hope. Jordan Pat added another try in the dying stages of the match, with Clent Lama converting, but by then it was too late to mount a comeback.

Despite the two late tries, the Hunters were unable to match Wynnum Manly’s six-try effort. The Seagulls dominated possession and field position, exploiting defensive lapses to secure a comfortable victory in front of their home fans.

For the SP PNG Hunters, the 32-10 result was another reminder of the work needed to finish the season strongly. With only a few rounds left, the team will look to regroup quickly, sharpen their defence, and aim for a stronger showing in their upcoming fixtures.
