SP PNG Hunters Stay in Finals Race with Dominant Performance Against Pride

The SP PNG Hunters kept their finals aspirations alive with a resounding 40-10 victory over Northern Pride in Round 23 of the Hostplus Cup at Barlow Park, Cairns, on Saturday. The Hunters dominated both halves to secure an important win away from home.

The visitors wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with Judah Rimbu diving over in the 12th minute. Solo Wane added another just four minutes later, before captain Ila Alu muscled through in the 23rd minute to extend their early lead. By halftime, the Hunters had established a commanding 22-4 advantage.

Northern Pride showed some fight when Laitia Moceidreke crossed the line in the 29th minute, giving the home fans something to cheer about. But that was their only moment of joy in the opening stanza as the Hunters responded quickly with Robert Mathias scoring before the break.

After halftime, the Hunters shifted gears and unleashed their attacking weapons. Halfback Sanny Wabo starred with three second-half tries, showcasing his speed and vision to tear apart the Pride defense in the 54th, 66th, and 76th minutes. His hat-trick sealed the win in emphatic fashion.

Jamie Mavoko’s boot was equally crucial, slotting four conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking. Gairo Voro and Clent Lama added a goal each, making it six from seven conversions overall. In contrast, the Pride could only manage a single conversion through Seamus King-Smith in the 72nd minute.

The home side managed a consolation try late in the game when Dane Aukafolau barged over in the 71st minute, but it came too late to change the outcome. By then, the Hunters had already asserted their dominance across all areas of the field.

With the 40-10 victory, the Hunters not only claimed vital competition points but also sent a strong message that their finals dream is still very much alive. Their ability to combine power, skill, and clinical finishing will make them a dangerous contender in the closing rounds.
