PNG Launches Special Edition Currency for 50th Independence Anniversary

The Bank of Papua New Guinea has released a special edition K50 note and 50 toea coin in celebration of the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary. The official launch took place in Port Moresby with Prime Minister James Marape and other leaders in attendance.

Two million K50 notes and 2.5 million 50t coins have already been circulated across the country. The Central Bank described the release as both a tribute to the past and a symbol of the nation’s aspirations.

The redesigned K50 note keeps the image of Parliament House and honours the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. A golden jubilee emblem and the Raggiana bird of paradise in flight were added to reflect Papua New Guinea’s progress over five decades.

The 50 toea coin, while retaining its distinct seven-sided design and national crest, now features a coloured PNG flag to represent unity and shared identity.

Governor Elizabeth Genia said the golden jubilee currency captures the journey of the nation and its people. She added that the Bank plans to introduce a redesigned K100 note in 2026 that will feature Sir Julius Chan.
