UN Secretary-General to Make Historic Visit to Papua New Guinea
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will make a historic first visit to Papua New Guinea next month, Prime Minister James Marape has confirmed.
Marape said the four-day visit marks the first time a sitting UN Secretary-General will visit the country, describing it as a milestone that highlights PNG’s rising influence in regional peacebuilding, climate action, and sustainable development.

The visit comes as PNG prepares to celebrate its 50th Independence Anniversary on September 16, with several Pacific and global leaders also expected to attend.
Ahead of the golden jubilee, churches across the country have been asked to lead a national month of reflection. The observance will culminate in the National Day of Prayer on August 26.
“Pray for your families, for unity, for your country, and for the end of corruption,” Marape urged. “Let us honour those who built this nation and commit ourselves to a better future.”
The Prime Minister also outlined his government's achievements, including tax relief, free education support, infrastructure upgrades, law and justice reforms, and economic transition from low- to middle-income status. He reiterated the government’s aim to achieve a balanced budget by 2027.
