PNG and New Zealand Strengthen Regional Bonds as PM Luxon Addresses Parliament
Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand, became only the second foreign leader to deliver an address in Papua New Guinea’s Parliament, following Australian PM Anthony Albanese’s 2023 visit.
Luxon thanked Parliament for the invitation, describing it as a rare and important honour. “To speak here as New Zealand’s first Prime Minister in this chamber is a privilege I do not take lightly,” he said.

He noted the strong cooperation between PNG and New Zealand, with Kiwi firms playing a part in building essential infrastructure like Gordon’s Market, the Jackson Airport flyover, and the national Parliament building.
Emphasising the role of regional alliances, Luxon acknowledged Australia’s significant contributions to Pacific development and its partnership with both nations.
On trade, Luxon stressed the need for increased engagement. “Our trade is growing, but we can go further — especially by integrating PNG into broader regional trade frameworks,” he said.
As he wraps up his visit today, Luxon continues to serve as New Zealand’s 42nd Prime Minister and holds key portfolios in national security and ministerial affairs.
