Australian PM Albanese and Deputy PM Marles Join PNG’s Golden Jubilee Festivities
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles arrived in Port Moresby on Monday to participate in Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary. Their presence highlights the evolution of relations between the two nations, a stark contrast to the 1975 ceremony when Australia’s leader handed its national flag to Sir John Guise.

The delegation was greeted at Jacksons International Airport by Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleu, Foreign Secretary Elias Wohengu, and Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald. Marles immediately travelled to Korobosea for a meeting with the Trade Union Congress, while Albanese headed to his hotel for scheduled engagements.
Before Wednesday’s national celebration, the Australia–PNG Bilateral and Leaders Forum will take place, during which the two countries are set to sign a new Defence Treaty. Albanese is also preparing to make a significant announcement in honour of PNG’s half-century of independence.
Jacksons Airport bustled with arrivals as more international guests flew in. Indonesian officials readied to welcome their Vice President, whose plane will be positioned next to Prince Edward’s private jet. Earlier in the day, global pop icon Akon arrived aboard an Air Niugini flight from Brisbane, while crowds gathered for the special Independence “Pipol’s Balus,” marking an especially eventful day at the capital’s gateway.
