International R&B and hip-hop Star Akon Set to Electrify PNG’s 50th Independence Festivities
International R&B and hip-hop sensation Akon arrived in Papua New Guinea on Monday to headline the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary concert. The celebrated artist is scheduled to perform at the Golden Jubilee event at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby on Wednesday, 17 September 2025.

Officials confirmed that the PNG Government invested K5 million to bring the world-renowned musician to the nation for this historic celebration. Enthusiastic fans greeted Akon at Jacksons International Airport, eager to witness the star whose music blends African rhythms with global pop and hip-hop influences.
Since the release of his 2004 debut album Trouble, Akon has earned worldwide acclaim for hits like Locked Up, Smack That, and Don’t Matter, collaborating with international icons such as Michael Jackson, Eminem, and David Guetta.
In addition to his musical success, Akon is known for his entrepreneurial ventures and humanitarian projects. His Akon Lighting Africa initiative delivers solar power to underserved communities across the African continent, and his music label was instrumental in launching Lady Gaga’s career.
Organizers anticipate a massive turnout for the Golden Jubilee Independence Concert, which will serve as a highlight of the celebrations marking half a century of Papua New Guinea’s independence.
