At the controls will be Captain Beverley Pakii, PNG’s first certified Airbus A220 captain, joined by veteran pilot Captain Timothy Narara. Their joint command underscores the skill and capability of Papua New Guinea’s own aviation professionals.

The jet, registered P2-PGA, left Montreal on September 10 (Friday 7 a.m. PNG time) and will make stops in Vancouver, Honolulu, and Fiji before touching down in Port Moresby. Its arrival will be greeted with a traditional water salute and an official welcome at the APEC Terminal, with Prime Minister James Marape, senior ministers, and Air Niugini executives all expected to be on hand.

Built for efficiency and comfort, the A220 is known for low emissions, excellent fuel economy, and the range to handle PNG’s challenging terrain. Passengers can look forward to a quieter, roomier cabin that sets a new standard for domestic and regional flights.

“This isn’t just the arrival of a new aircraft—it’s the start of a new era for Air Niugini and the country,” said Captain Samiu Taufa, the airline’s Officer in Charge and Acting Chief Operating Officer. “The A220 reflects our commitment to safety, reliability and service excellence, while proudly carrying our flag into the future.”

As Papua New Guinea marks 50 years of independence, the People’s Balus is set to become a symbol of national pride—linking communities across the country and strengthening international connections for years to come.
