PNG's Morobe Governor Luther Wenge Dies After Surgery in Port Moresby

Governor Luther Akisawa Wenge of Morobe Province passed away this morning at Port Moresby General Hospital, following complications from emergency surgery. The announcement was made by Prime Minister James Marape, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

According to Mr. Marape, the late Governor underwent urgent surgery to stop internal bleeding. Although medical teams worked tirelessly to save him, complications from his pre-existing diabetic condition led to his death. The family gave consent for the removal of life support after doctors confirmed that he could not recover around 4 a.m.

“Governor Wenge was a dedicated servant of the people of Morobe, a seasoned lawyer, and a principled leader,” Mr. Marape said in a statement. “The nation joins his family and the people of Morobe in mourning his passing.”

Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso also paid tribute to Mr. Wenge, describing his death as a shock to the people of Morobe and the nation, occurring just days before PNG’s 50th Independence celebrations. He highlighted the Governor’s three-term tenure from 1997 to 2012, and his current office since 2022, noting his tireless advocacy for justice and development in his province.

Governor Wenge’s political career was marked by an outspoken and bold presence in parliament, where he used his legal expertise to enrich debates and champion the rights of his people.

Mr. Rosso described him as a “true Morobean son” whose legacy will endure, and extended condolences to his family, the Wenge relatives, and communities of Samangzing and Nawae.

Prime Minister Marape said arrangements for Governor Wenge’s funeral and repatriation are underway. He also acknowledged the personal loss to the Pangu Pati and the coalition government, affirming the nation’s respect for the late Governor’s unwavering dedication.
