Pacific Leaders Arrive in PNG for 50th Independence Anniversary

Papua New Guinea Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko announced the arrival of Pacific Island leaders in Port Moresby this afternoon, marking the beginning of the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations. The leaders traveled on board a Solomon Islands Airbus, highlighting the spirit of regional unity and cooperation.

Minister Tkatchenko described it as an “absolute honour” to welcome the distinguished guests on behalf of the PNG Government and its people. He said their presence reflects the enduring bonds among Pacific nations and the shared commitment to regional solidarity.

The visiting leaders will be in the country throughout the week to participate in official programs commemorating Papua New Guinea’s golden jubilee of independence. Government officials have prepared a series of cultural and diplomatic events to showcase the nation’s achievements and vibrant traditions.

Their arrival in Port Moresby follows the successful conclusion of the Pacific Islands Forum Meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The forum addressed key regional issues including climate change, economic development, and collective security, reinforcing the importance of Pacific-wide dialogue.

Minister Tkatchenko expressed confidence that the leaders’ participation in Papua New Guinea’s milestone celebrations will strengthen diplomatic ties and foster greater cooperation within the Pacific community. He emphasized that their presence symbolizes a shared vision for a prosperous and united region.
