PM Marape’s Same Promises for Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has renewed his pledge to national unity, law and order, and economic progress, echoing commitments he has made throughout his tenure. His remarks followed the nation’s historic 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, where he urged citizens to put the country above tribal, provincial, and personal interests.
Speaking after the Jubilee, Marape said the milestone reinforced the need for all Papua New Guineans to rise above divisions. “As we come out of our 50th anniversary, the country is still united under one flag,” he stated, adding that his loyalty to Papua New Guinea surpasses any allegiance to tribe, district, or province.
The Prime Minister addressed recent unrest in the Southern Highlands, particularly in Nipa, stressing that due process must guide investigations. He reminded the public that public offices belong to the people and that allegations should be resolved through lawful authorities and the courts rather than through violence or intimidation.
Marape commended community leaders and citizens who continue to support peace but warned that unlawful behavior will not be tolerated. He said police and special forces have been directed to ensure that gun-related crimes and disorder do not undermine national stability.
Security operations will be reinforced, with police, defence, and correctional services based in Mendi to maintain order in the Highlands. Marape emphasized that peace in Hela, Enga, and Southern Highlands is essential for communities and for protecting resource projects such as Porgera and the PNG LNG, which have contributed billions of kina to the economy.
He further revealed plans to work with development partners and investors to open alternative roads in key project areas, including routes linking Mendi, Margarima, Tari, and Kikori. According to Marape, resources from Tax Credit Projects will fund these vital connections to boost investment and ensure the smooth delivery of services.
The Prime Minister concluded by urging Papua New Guineans, particularly those in the western Highlands, to respect the law and embrace a shared vision for peace and growth. While his statements reflect familiar themes from past addresses, Marape insisted that unity and adherence to the rule of law remain critical as the country embarks on its next 50 years.
