Visa Signs Historic Three-Year Deal with PNG Rugby League

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has paid tribute to Papua New Guinea’s Founding Father, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, in a commemorative visit to his hometown of Wewak. The trip, made with Prime Minister James Marape, took place on the eve of PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary, underscoring the international significance of the milestone and the enduring influence of the nation's first Prime Minister.

At a wreath-laying ceremony, Guterres highlighted Sir Michael’s distinguished contributions to global affairs, particularly his advocacy for environmental policy and sustainable development. The UN chief credited him with playing a key role in the creation of Articles 5 and 6 of the Paris Agreement, which focus on reducing carbon emissions and fostering international cooperation on climate solutions.

"I am not only paying tribute to a leader of a nation but a distinguished citizen of the world who has contributed to the rest of our planet," Guterres told attendees, which included dignitaries, community leaders, and members of the Somare family.

Prime Minister Marape stated that the occasion affirmed Sir Michael’s lasting legacy, noting that his leadership continues to inspire and elevate the country's position on the world stage. As Papua New Guinea prepares for its golden jubilee, the tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the leadership that laid the foundation for a sovereign and united nation.
