244,040 Students Ready to Sit National Exams Across PNG

Students across Papua New Guinea are gearing up for the National Examinations next week, with Grade 10 papers from October 6 to 10, Grade 12 from October 13 to 17, and Grade 8 from October 20 to 23. Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra confirmed that over 240,000 students will sit for the exams, including 87,500 Grade 10 students from more than 500 schools, 36,540 Grade 12 students from 250 secondary schools, and 120,000 Grade 8 students from 3,400 primary schools. The numbers were finalized through schools’ online submissions.

Dr. Kombra said that all Grade 10 exam booklets have already been delivered to schools nationwide, and marking will commence immediately after the first paper in the National Capital District. Grade 10 scripts will then be sent to provinces for uniform marking. Meanwhile, Grade 12 scripts will be assessed in Port Moresby, and Grade 8 papers in the provinces. He emphasized that the department is working closely with local governments and security personnel to ensure exams proceed smoothly despite incidents of violence in certain areas.

The Education Secretary warned schools and students that malpractice would not be tolerated, stressing that consequences could include non-certification for students, teacher dismissal, or school suspension for a minimum of three years. “Examinations now reflect students’ hard work and set better educational benchmarks. I wish all students the best as they prepare for these important exams,” Dr. Kombra said.
