PNG Approves Defence Treaty with Australia to Boost Security

Papua New Guinea has approved a landmark defence treaty with Australia, with Prime Minister James Marape describing it as the most significant security arrangement in the country’s history.

The Prime Minister confirmed Cabinet’s endorsement of the Mutual Defence Treaty and said it will now be brought before Parliament for ratification under Section 117 of the Constitution. Australia will also ratify the agreement through its Parliament.

According to Mr. Marape, the treaty builds on decades of cooperation between the two neighbours, moving beyond earlier agreements to include full interoperability of forces. He said it will improve PNG’s ability to police its vast borders, strengthen land and air capabilities, and build a strong reserve force.

The plan will see the development of a 3,000-strong reservist unit, with opportunities for up to 10,000 Papua New Guineans to serve under joint arrangements with the Australian Defence Force. PNG will also expand its own regular force to 7,000.

Mr. Marape emphasised that PNG’s sovereignty remains secure under the treaty. “Our Defence Force will report only to its commander, while Australians report to theirs. Both sides will train and operate together, but sovereignty is never compromised.”

He noted that provisions are included to respect PNG and Australia’s existing defence relationships with other nations.

Looking ahead, Mr. Marape said the treaty is about preparing PNG for the next 50 years. “Our sovereignty is defined by our security, and this treaty ensures PNG is ready to protect its people and borders,” he said.
