Fiji Outclass Cook Islands in 44-24 Pacific Championships Victory
Fiji Bati made a powerful statement in Port Moresby, overpowering the Cook Islands Aitu 44-24 in the Pacific Championships opener at Santos National Football Stadium on Saturday, 18th October. It was a sunny afternoon that saw the Fijians display both speed and structure in an impressive all-round performance.
Jahream Bula was the standout for Fiji, scoring a hat-trick of tries within the first 37 minutes to put his side firmly in control. Caleb Navale also contributed a try in the 20th minute, while Brandon Wakeham’s conversions kept the scoreboard ticking over.

By halftime, the Bati held a commanding 28-6 advantage, their forwards dominating the middle and creating space for their backs. Wakeham converted four first-half goals, showing precision and calm under pressure.
The Cook Islands’ resilience emerged in the second stanza, as Justin Makirere, Reuben Rennie, and Pride Petterson-Robati crossed the line to narrow the gap. KL Iro had earlier opened the scoring for them in the first half, and Esom Ioka successfully landed all four conversions.
Fiji continued to attack with confidence, adding further tries through Kitione Kautoga, Kurt Donoghoe, and Solomone Saukuru. Their quick passing and offloads kept the Aitu defenders guessing as the Bati extended their lead.
Despite Taane Milne’s sin-binning in the 48th minute, Fiji maintained defensive discipline. They absorbed pressure well and prevented the Cook Islands from mounting any serious late comeback.
Wakeham’s kicking accuracy and Fiji’s composure were instrumental in sealing the 44-24 win. The result reflected a combination of flair, structure, and teamwork — hallmarks of a side ready to contend for top honours in the competition.
The Cook Islands Aitu will now regroup and aim to tighten their defense ahead of their next outing, while Fiji Bati will take confidence from this strong start in their Pacific Championships campaign.
