Nene Macdonald to Captain PNG Prime Minister’s XIII Against Australia

Papua New Guinea’s Nene Macdonald will lead the PNG Prime Minister’s XIII side when they face Australia in tomorrow’s highly anticipated men’s fixture.

The captaincy announcement was made yesterday, with Macdonald joining Head Coach Jason Demetriou at a press conference ahead of the clash. The experienced outside back, who has represented PNG in 19 tests and three PM’s XIII matches, expressed his pride in captaining the national side for the first time.

“I’m honoured to lead my country and test ourselves against a tier-one rugby league nation like Australia,” Macdonald said.

This will be the 31-year-old’s maiden outing as captain of a Papua New Guinea representative team, and he said the opportunity means a lot to both him and his family.

Supporting Macdonald in leadership duties will be veteran forward Jack de Belin, CQ Capras powerhouse Nixon Putt, and reliable back-rower Epel Kapinias, forming a strong leadership group for the encounter.
