PNG Kumuls Coach Says Philip Coates Still in Future Plans

Papua New Guinea Kumuls coach Jason Demetriou has set the record straight on why young winger Philip Coates was not included in the Junior Kumuls squad for Sunday’s Prime Minister’s XIII fixture.

Speculation had circulated that Philip was overlooked due to his brother Xavier’s decision to represent Australia, but Demetriou was quick to deny the claim. He said Philip’s omission had nothing to do with family ties and everything to do with personal circumstances.

“Philip was certainly in contention,” Demetriou said. “He had to pull out of the Junior Kumuls squad for family reasons, and that’s the only reason he’s not playing.”

Demetriou added that Philip remains a key prospect for the national setup and will be considered in upcoming tournaments. “He’s committed to PNG, and he’ll be in the frame for future matches,” the coach assured.

The Kumuls mentor also mentioned that several emerging players, including Jerrod Horn, Sam Stevenson, and debutant Cooper Bai, are now stepping up to fill the gaps in the national development program.

“Those boys are coming through strongly, and in the next 12 months, they’ll be fighting for World Cup spots,” he said.

Philip Coates, who starred in PNG’s thrilling 22-22 draw with the Australian Schoolboys last year, may have missed this weekend’s game, but Demetriou believes his time in PNG colours is far from over.
