Nomane Wins Legal Standing to Pursue Opposition Leadership in PNG
Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court has ruled in favour of Chuave MP James Nomane, unanimously granting him standing in his Section 18 case to pursue the position of Opposition Leader. The five-man bench delivered the decision, giving new momentum to Nomane’s challenge against his earlier removal as Deputy Opposition Leader.
Mr Nomane, speaking after the ruling, said a substantive matter will follow, signalling that the legal process is far from over. He said the decision was a positive step toward restoring balance and accountability in Papua New Guinea’s political system.

He stressed that his legal battle is not about personal gain or regional politics, but about defending the rights and voice of the people. “My fight is for the people of Papua New Guinea, not just Chuave or Simbu,” he stated.
Nomane expressed gratitude to his legal counsel, led by well-known lawyer Paul Mawa, for their continued support in steering the case forward. He was previously replaced as Deputy Opposition Leader by North Fly MP James Donald during the last sitting of Parliament.
He said the Supreme Court ruling now allows him to pursue the substantive case to reclaim the leadership of the Opposition, a position he believes must serve the national interest.
Nomane also criticised the ongoing hardships faced by citizens, saying Papua New Guinea is confronted with serious challenges in service delivery and governance. He vowed to restore integrity to the Opposition and ensure government spending is held under close scrutiny.
“This country is bigger than any one leader, and this fight is for the 10 million-plus people of Papua New Guinea,” Nomane said.
