PNG Air Expands Fleet with Arrival of First ATR 72-600 Aircraft
PNG Air has taken a major step forward in its modernization drive with the arrival of its first ATR 72-600 aircraft, officially marking the start of its renewed fleet expansion program. The airline confirmed that this is the first of four new ATR 72-600s scheduled to arrive before the end of the year.

According to PNG Air Chief Executive Officer Brian Fraser, the addition of the new aircraft is a key milestone in the company’s three-year strategic plan. “This fleet investment represents a pivotal step in the execution of PNG Air’s strategic plan,” Fraser said. “The ATR 72-600 offers proven efficiency, reliability, and capacity — essential as we streamline operations and position the airline for sustainable growth.”
The ATR 72-600, a globally recognized aircraft for its fuel efficiency and short take-off and landing capabilities, is particularly suited to PNG’s unique geography — from coastal airstrips to rugged highland terrain. The airline says the aircraft’s performance makes it ideal for maintaining connections to some of the country’s most isolated communities.
The introduction of the new aircraft will see PNG Air gradually retire its Dash 8-100 fleet, transitioning fully to ATR 72-600s. This move aims to simplify operations, lower maintenance costs, and enhance scheduling flexibility while improving passenger comfort and reducing noise.
Fraser commended his team for their efforts in delivering the project, highlighting the dedication of PNG Air’s staff. “Their commitment embodies the very spirit of PNG Air — connecting our people, our communities, and our nation with pride,” he said.
PNG Air has been a crucial part of the nation’s transport network for nearly four decades, offering safe and affordable services across 22 destinations. The airline operates over 460 weekly flights and carried more than 150,000 passengers in 2024.
Owned largely by Papua New Guinean institutions such as MRDC and NasFund, and supported by around 2,900 local shareholders, PNG Air remains focused on linking communities and supporting national growth through reliable air travel.
