Prime Minister James Marape and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed the historic agreement, underscoring both nations’ shared vision of protecting sovereignty, democracy, and regional stability in the Pacific. The treaty reinforces a decades-long relationship that has evolved from development cooperation to strategic defence collaboration.
Prime Minister Albanese described the agreement as a defining moment in the region’s security history. “True friends. Nearest neighbours. And now, allies,” he said. “Together, we have committed to protect each other’s sovereignty and democracy—because security in the Pacific is a responsibility shared by all the countries in the Pacific.”
The Mutual Defence Treaty will enhance cooperation through joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and strategic coordination aimed at strengthening peace and stability throughout the Pacific region. Both nations have agreed to ensure that the treaty will come into effect once domestic processes are completed.
For Papua New Guinea, the treaty represents a significant step forward in its defence capacity and regional engagement, highlighting its growing role as a key security partner in the Pacific. The agreement cements PNG’s position as a reliable ally to Australia in maintaining regional order and resilience.
The signing signals a deepening of trust between the two nations that share not only borders but also values and aspirations for a secure and peaceful Pacific. It marks a continuation of cooperation built over decades of friendship, now formalised through an enduring Alliance.
