PNG Appoints Chief Superintendent Steven Harris to Lead Internal Affairs

Papua New Guinea’s Royal Constabulary has appointed Chief Superintendent Steven Harris as the new Executive Director of the Internal Affairs Directorate, a move aimed at tightening investigations into police misconduct and corruption.

Police Commissioner David Manning announced that Chief Superintendent Harris will lead efforts to address internal discipline and integrity within the force, including the introduction of increased alcohol and drug testing among officers.

“Chief Superintendent Harris has more than two decades of leadership experience in policing and public service across Australian jurisdictions, and he is now a sworn officer within the ranks of the RPNGC,” Commissioner Manning said.

He noted that Harris has an extensive background in specialist investigations and compliance enforcement, having worked in Australia, the Solomon Islands, and other international assignments.

Since assuming his post, Chief Superintendent Harris has already begun collaborating with international partners to procure testing equipment to curb substance abuse within the constabulary.

Commissioner Manning emphasized that the use of alcohol and drugs poses a major threat to professional policing and public trust. He said that dismissing officers involved in such conduct would restore confidence in the police force.

He further highlighted that the recruitment of experienced officers from overseas has been well received by local police and the public. “Chief Superintendent Harris will integrate well with his fellow officers and lead by example to uphold integrity within the force,” he said.
