PNG Musician Daniel Bilip Passes Away After Brave Battle With Cancer

Papua New Guinea’s music industry is mourning the death of one of its most admired performers, Daniel Bilip, who passed away on Friday, 10 October 2025, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was 38.

Bilip died at 12:30 p.m. at the Angau Memorial Hospital Cancer Ward in Lae, Morobe Province. According to family members, he had been diagnosed with tongue cancer three months earlier and underwent chemotherapy at both Angau Memorial Hospital and Port Moresby General Hospital before completing radiotherapy treatment in India.

The family revealed that Bilip was due for a medical review and operation on the day he passed away. His condition deteriorated earlier in the day, and though his mother had signed a consent form for an abdominal procedure, he died before doctors could begin surgery.

His sister-in-law, Charity Bilip, speaking on behalf of her husband Steven, described Daniel as a courageous and selfless man who fought hard until the end. “Daniel is a fighter. Even when he couldn’t eat and was in pain, he always said, ‘I’m alright.’ He never wanted anyone to see him weak,” she said.

Born in 1987, Bilip was known for his humor, humility, and close bond with his fans. “He was a people’s person,” Charity recalled. “When he wasn’t performing, he was surrounded by family and friends, always making others laugh.”

Before his passing, Bilip had been preparing for a national tour with Coke Studio PNG alongside other local artists. His death came as a shock to the music community and his supporters nationwide.

The Bilip family used this time of mourning to raise awareness about the dangers of tongue cancer, urging Papua New Guineans to avoid betelnut chewing and smoking. They also appealed to the government to improve cancer care across the country, saying, “It’s a serious cancer and a growing problem in PNG.”
