PNG PM Witnesses Swearing-In of Bougainville’s 5th House of Representatives

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has reaffirmed his government’s partnership with Bougainville, describing the inauguration of the 5th House of Representatives as a symbol of unity and progress in the Bougainville Peace Process.

The ceremony, held in Buka, followed the completion of the 2025 Bougainville General Elections that returned President Ishmael Toroama to office for a second term. Members of the new House were sworn in before Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika, with Deputy Speaker of the PNG Parliament Koni Iguan attending as an official guest.

Marape was accompanied by senior government representatives, including Police Minister and Bougainville Regional MP Peter Tsiamalili Jr, Communications Minister Timothy Masiu, and MPs Francesca Semoso and Jimmy Miringtoro. The event also drew Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald and UN Resident Coordinator Richard Howard, reflecting strong external support for the region’s development.

Speaking after the inauguration, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Port Moresby’s long-standing commitment to the Bougainville Peace Agreement, stressing the importance of partnership and respect.

“Today’s event is not just a ceremony—it represents our shared journey of reconciliation and peace,” Marape said. “Papua New Guinea stands alongside Bougainville as we continue to shape a stable and inclusive future together.”

He said the inauguration marked more than a transition in leadership, calling it a moment to acknowledge over two decades of collaboration, peacebuilding, and governance achievements under the peace framework.

Marape’s participation underscored the National Government’s recognition of Bougainville’s autonomy and its vision for a united, peaceful, and prosperous Papua New Guinea.
