PNG’s Peter ToRot Officially Declared a Saint in Rome

Papua New Guinea’s very own Peter ToRot has been officially recognized as Saint Peter ToRot following his historic canonization in Rome today, alongside six others.

The solemn ceremony took place before a packed St. Peter’s Square, where an estimated 70,000 faithful gathered, including more than 170 pilgrims from Papua New Guinea.

Representing the ToRot family, Peter Senat, the son of ToRot’s only daughter Rufina Iamama, presented his grandfather’s relic on stage before the formal declaration of sainthood, known as the “formula of canonization,” which was proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV.

Among those who took part in the ceremony was Sr. Celine Tirupia Tatamai, the granddaughter of St. Peter ToRot, who read the Prayers of the Faithful in Tok Pisin, marking a proud cultural moment for Papua New Guinea.

A Holy Mass followed the canonization rites, concelebrated by Cardinal Sir John Ribat and other cardinals alongside Pope Leo XIV.

In his homily, the Pope reminded the congregation that the seven newly canonized saints stand as witnesses of faith, who, by God’s grace, “kept the lamp of faith burning.” He encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast in prayer, saying the new saints would aid them in their “vocation to holiness.”

St. Peter ToRot now joins the ranks of thousands of saints in the Catholic Church, venerated for his unwavering faith and courage, and will be honored and sought for intercession through prayer by Catholics worldwide.
