PNG and Australia Launch Joint Military Exercise in Morobe

A major joint military training operation between the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has officially commenced in Morobe Province. Exercise Wantok Warrior 2025 marks the continuation of the long-running defence partnership between the two nations.

This week, PNGDF and ADF troops arrived at Igam Barracks, north of Lae, on CH-47F Chinook helicopters, signalling the start of the training program. The operation involves collaboration between the Port Moresby-based 1st Royal Pacific Islands Regiment (1RPIR) Alpha Company, the PNGDF Engineering Battalion (Bravo Company), and Australia’s Townsville-based 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR).

Several ADF specialist units—including aviation, engineering, and medical teams—are also participating. In total, around 300 personnel from both countries are engaged in the training, which runs from October 13 to 29.

Exercise Wantok Warrior, first introduced in 2009, aims to strengthen interoperability between PNG and Australian forces. Military officials say the exercise helps enhance operational readiness and deepen defence ties across the Pacific region
