Brazil Backs Stronger Partnership with PNG on Climate Leadership
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has received strong support from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for deeper cooperation between the two forest-rich nations. The call came during a bilateral meeting in Belém on the sidelines of COP30, hosted in Brazil’s Amazon region.
President Lula described both countries as “forest-rich nations with shared responsibilities in global climate leadership,” adding that Brazil viewed Papua New Guinea as a natural partner in environmental protection, renewable energy, and fair trade.

Welcoming Prime Minister Marape and his delegation, Lula said both countries are “guardians of the planet’s lungs,” and must cooperate closely in sustainable forest management and energy transition. “We live in forests — our people depend on them, and our planet depends on them. Without forests, there is no life and no future for our children,” he said.
Lula announced that Brazil is considering opening an embassy in Port Moresby to strengthen diplomatic, trade, and technical cooperation. He said this would enhance collaboration in agriculture, renewable energy, and science, noting Brazil’s readiness to broaden ties beyond climate talks into trade, health, and education.
The Brazilian leader also suggested dispatching his Minister of Economy to Port Moresby for discussions with PNG’s economic team, signalling a commitment to building long-term partnerships in agribusiness, energy, and technology.
Highlighting Brazil’s achievements in clean energy, Lula noted that 87% of the country’s electricity is generated from renewable sources. He said Brazil aims to use its state-owned company, Petrobras, to drive investment in alternative energy.
Lula further invited Papua New Guinea to join Brazil’s Global Alliance Against Hunger and Obesity, a new initiative to combat food insecurity worldwide. “The world spends trillions on weapons while millions go hungry,” he said. “We must redirect those resources to food, education, and health — to build a fairer, more humane world.”
