PNGDF Joins Regional Mission to Strengthen Pacific Disaster Preparedness

Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) members are among the latest participants in the Pacific Response Group (PRG), a regional partnership aimed at enhancing collective disaster response and preparedness across the Pacific.

The PRG recently set sail from Townsville, Australia to Nadi, Fiji aboard the ADV Reliant for a certification exercise focused on disaster readiness, gender and peace training, and humanitarian first aid.

The initiative brings together defence forces from Australia, Fiji, France, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga, pooling resources and expertise to improve coordination and resilience during emergencies.

According to the Australian High Commission in PNG, the program reflects a shared Pacific commitment to security cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

During the exercise, PRG personnel engaged in training that emphasized joint civilian-military collaboration, emergency logistics, and regional communication strategies.

The group’s assistance is made available to any Pacific Islands Forum member nation affected by natural disasters, ensuring support can be rapidly deployed where it is most needed.

Papua New Guinea’s involvement highlights its growing role in strengthening regional disaster preparedness and promoting peace and stability within the Pacific community.
