Four Young Lives Lost in PNG's Tambul Nebilyer Landslip After Torrential Rains

For the people of Kulumindi, Friday night brought not rain—but ruin. A massive landslip swept through their village in Tambul Nebilyer District, killing four children and shattering a family that had lived peacefully on the mountainside for generations.

The tragedy struck around 10 p.m., when waterlogged earth above their home finally gave way. Inside the kunai-thatched house, six children lay asleep with their mother. Only two emerged alive—the rest, including a two-month-old infant, were buried under earth and debris.

Their father had been attending a church event in Jiwaka and returned to find his home gone and his children dead. Neighbors helped dig through the mud with bare hands, but it was too late.

Lisbon Mini, the uncle of the children, stood in the wreckage the next morning. “Fifteen years ago, the hill moved here too,” he said. “But that time, we were spared. This time, the land took our future.”

Mark Talupa, a local leader in Kulumindi, said the community had never seen rain like this. “It didn’t stop. Day and night—pouring. The ground turned to soup.”

Disaster response teams from the Western Highlands are now on the ground, coordinating aid and evaluating risks for nearby households. But the real fear lingers: with more rain forecast, other families on steep slopes could face the same fate.
