PNG Launches 2025 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup With Historic Women’s Fixtures
Papua New Guinea welcomed the start of the 2025 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in Port Moresby today, marking a new chapter for one of Melanesia’s most recognised regional football tournaments. Supporters across the country and the wider Pacific are preparing for an exciting week of competition as the event gets underway at Sir John Guise Stadium.
The tournament opened with a milestone moment at 1pm, as the PNG Reds women’s side faced the Fiji Kulas—the first time women’s matches have been included since the event was introduced. PNG Reds coach Susan Steven said her young squad understood the significance of the occasion and were eager to make an impact.
She expressed gratitude to the MSG Secretariat and the Papua New Guinea Government for backing the inclusion of women’s football, noting that the decision reflects a stronger commitment to developing the women’s game across the region.
The men’s draw also begins this afternoon, with the PNG Reds men meeting Vanuatu. Coach Harrison Kamake said the squad is made up largely of emerging players aiming to test themselves against higher-ranked opponents and use the competition as a springboard for growth.
Defending champions PNG Gold will commence their campaign on Wednesday, when the men’s team lines up against the Solomon Islands. The PNG Gold women’s team—featuring national representatives—will also make their first appearance, taking on Vanuatu in what is expected to be a closely watched encounter.
“Football keeps moving forward when we give every player a chance to shine, and this year’s tournament proves how far the region is willing to go,” said Port Moresby resident Martin Wama.
