PNG University of Goroka Closes Indefinitely After Weekend Unrest
PNG’s University of Goroka has suspended all classes indefinitely after violent confrontations between students and surrounding community members over the weekend. The university administration confirmed the shutdown yesterday, describing it as a necessary measure to protect its students and staff.
Vice Chancellor Dr Teng Waninga said the decision followed extensive consultations involving the University Council and Academic Board. He noted that while differing views were expected, the institution had chosen a path that best protected its academic environment. “Stakeholders are concerned… we are supported by many people,” Dr Waninga said. “When decisions are made, not everyone will agree but this decision was made in the best interest of student safety and academic integrity.”
According to Dr Waninga, roughly three-quarters of the student population has already completed final assessments, while the remaining cohort will sit their outstanding tests online from November 24 to 29. He told continuing students that the academic year had effectively concluded and urged them to return home while completing any unresolved tasks remotely.
In the meantime, Acting Prime Minister and Lae MP John Rosso confirmed that buses escorted by police had been dispatched to Goroka to help relocate stranded students. He said the Morobe Provincial Government had taken steps to support those who feel unsafe, offering Lae as a secure transit point.
Rosso also revealed that temporary accommodation and meals had been made available at Bugandi Secondary School and Lae Secondary School. Students will remain there until their respective provincial administrations arrange onward travel.
Authorities say the shutdown marks one of the most significant disturbances to the academic calendar in recent years.
