PNG police have confirmed that six seriously wounded victims of the Pindiu LLG election violence were flown to Lae yesterday as investigations continue into the clashes that claimed two lives.

The violence began on Tuesday when a councillor seeking the LLG presidency allegedly attacked another candidate, sparking a chain of retaliation.

Two people were killed and more than 20 houses and vehicles burnt in the confrontation. Supt Siguyaru said police arrived the following day and managed to contain the situation, which is still tense but being closely monitored.

Four suspects were moved to Lae on Saturday and locked up at the Lae police cells. A firearm, 20 live rounds and empty shells were also seized and will be used as evidence.

A total of nine people were injured in the clashes. Police say six of them were airlifted out on Friday due to the severity of their wounds, and security operations in Pindiu will continue until the area is fully stabilised.
