Senior officials from both countries attended the handover, a show of the strengthening ties in disaster preparedness efforts. Deputy Assistant Defence Minister Stanley Samban said the new equipment would greatly support the work of the National Emergency Operations Centre and help the country respond more effectively during emergencies.
He thanked China for its ongoing support, recalling previous assistance during crises such as the Mount Ulawun eruption, Enga landslides and major flooding in Western Province. “This enduring partnership reflects our mutual commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods during crises,” Samban said.
Representing China, Guangdong Province Vice Governor Wang Xi told the gathering that the donation was part of a broader effort to deepen cooperation with Pacific Island nations under President Xi Jinping’s direction for South-South partnerships. He described the relationship as long-standing and built on shared aspirations.
“Friendship between China and Pacific Island countries is time-honored and transcends mountains and oceans,” Wang Xi said.
