PNG rugby league circles were buzzing on Wednesday after former Kumul David Mead publicly put his hand up to coach the PNG Orchids, following the national body’s decision to move on from head coach Tahnee Norris.

Rather than waiting for a formal call, Mead took to Facebook to express his interest directly to the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League, signalling his readiness to lead the women’s side.

The timing is critical for the Orchids, who are now seeking stability and direction as they continue to build toward future Rugby League World Cup campaigns and strengthen pathways for women in the sport.

Mead, who wore the Kumuls jersey 15 times and scored 10 tries before retirement, brings international experience and a strong understanding of elite rugby league environments. His willingness to step forward has been widely discussed among fans and former players.

He also suggested that he would not be alone, hinting at the involvement of former PNG and NRL centre Justin Olam as part of a possible coaching team, a prospect that has drawn positive reaction online.

The PNGRFL has remained silent so far, but Mead’s statement has ensured his name stays firmly in contention as decisions loom.

“PNGRFL you have my number. I put my hand up to coach the Orchids. Ps I know some great assistant coaches who are willing to help. One of their initials are J.O…”
