Massive Fire Destroys Menduli Building in PNG Highlands Town

Mendi town in PNG’s Southern Highlands Province was rocked by a massive fire that tore through the historic Menduli Limited building early Tuesday morning.

The blaze quickly engulfed the old commercial complex, threatening nearby properties. Residents jumped into action, working tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching the town’s only Bank of South Pacific branch.

Tenants Pisgah Limited and Wantok Trading lost their entire businesses, while other smaller local shops within the building were also destroyed. Mendi-Munihu MP Raphael Tonpi called it a “heartbreaking day” for the province, recalling the building’s long-standing contribution to local commerce.

“These buildings hold memories for everyone who grew up in Mendi. Their loss affects not just the owners, but the entire community,” Tonpi said.

Meanwhile, Commander Anthony Wagambie of the Upper Highlands Special Operations reassured residents that the town remains calm. He confirmed that the fire involved three shops but said the BSP Bank was untouched.

“There was no looting, no large crowd, and law and order remain intact,” he said. Residents reportedly gathered peacefully near the site, expressing sorrow over the loss while continuing their daily routines.

“The public should rely only on official updates. Security personnel remain active to ensure continued peace,” Wagambie added.
