NRL PNG Chiefs factor into Air Niugini expansion plans : Duma

The anticipated entry of the NRL PNG Chiefs in 2028 is influencing national infrastructure planning, with Air Niugini’s fleet renewal program identified as a major support pillar for the code’s expansion.

State Enterprise Minister William Duma said the delivery of Air Niugini’s third Airbus A220 marked a timely boost as the country prepares for increased movement of players, supporters and commercial partners.

He said the national carrier would be essential in connecting Papua New Guinea to key rugby league destinations in Australia.

Mr Duma said the A220 aircraft would strengthen Air Niugini’s ability to respond to growing travel demand linked to the PNG Chiefs’ future NRL campaign.

“This will be very important as our PNG Chiefs get ready to take the field in the 2028 NRL season,” he said.

He said PNG’s strong rugby league culture made it critical for the airline to be aligned with national sporting priorities.

The minister said while wide-bodied jets would continue servicing major routes, the A220s offered greater flexibility for special events and supporter travel.

“I can see a future where there is strong demand for dedicated supporter flights to away matches,” Mr Duma said.

He also highlighted Air Niugini’s long-standing commitment to near-international routes, including Sydney, even during periods of low commercial returns.

Looking ahead to the 2026 rugby league calendar, Mr Duma said fan travel was already increasing, with the PNG Hunters set to play nine away games in Queensland.
