Minister Solan adds to PNG's String of recent Parliamentary Deaths

Papua New Guinea has again been struck by the loss of a sitting Member of Parliament, with the passing of Telefomin MP Hon. Solan Mirisim adding to the growing list of national leaders who have died in recent months. He passed away early yesterday morning at the Port Moresby International Hospital after a brief illness.

Hon. Mirisim, first elected in 2012, had become a prominent figure in Parliament and served in several ministerial roles. His most recent post was Minister for Works and Highways under the Marape Government, where he helped steer major national infrastructure programs.

He was known for championing the Connect PNG Program, pushing for improved road links, and delivering key projects such as the country’s longest footbridge at Papa-Lealea. His efforts in promoting sustainable forestry and downstream processing also shaped national policy direction.

Raised in Telefomin, he completed his education locally before studying business management at Lae Business College. Before entering politics, he was involved in business and community development work.

His death has been described as a major loss for Parliament and the nation, particularly at a time when PNG has already lost several serving MPs in quick succession. Government leaders said his “dedication and vision will be remembered for years.”

Funeral arrangements will be made known once confirmed.
