PNG Receives Heartfelt Thanks From Vanuatu After MSG PM Cup Success
Papua New Guinea has been praised by Vanuatu for the exceptional treatment given to its national teams during the Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister’s Cup. Prime Minister Jotham Napat expressed the country’s appreciation in a letter addressed to Prime Minister James Marape.
His remarks followed PNG’s decision to charter an Air Niugini aircraft to return both the men’s and women’s squads to Vanuatu. The teams were accompanied by a delegation led by MSG PM Cup Local Organising Committee Chairman Leonard Louma.

During their stay, the visiting players were accommodated at the Hilton Hotel, where they enjoyed premium five-star hospitality. Team officials said the comfort and treatment added positively to the players’ preparation.
Vanuatu went on to claim a significant sporting milestone by defeating Papua New Guinea 7–5 in a penalty shoot-out to win the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup. The result was celebrated widely across Port Vila and other provinces.
On arrival at Port Vila International Airport, PNG officials formally handed over the cup to Vanuatu authorities in a small but meaningful ceremony. The event highlighted the strong relationship shared between the two Melanesian nations.
Supporters turned out in huge numbers to welcome the players home. The airport area was filled with cheering fans, many of whom continued celebrating long after the ceremony ended.
Prime Minister Napat said the memorable win would stay with every player for the rest of their lives, adding that PNG’s hospitality contributed greatly to the unforgettable campaign.
