PNG Politics: Supreme Court Confirms Nomane as Opposition Leader
PNG’s Supreme Court has settled the leadership question in the Opposition, ruling that Chuave MP James Nomane is the rightful Leader of the Opposition after a tightly contested secret ballot among MPs.
The ballot saw eight MPs voting for Mr Nomane while six cast their votes for incumbent leader Douglas Tomuriesa. The results were presented to the Court, which then declared Mr Nomane as the lawful Opposition Leader. The bench also ordered the Speaker to present the ruling in Parliament.

Mr Nomane said he accepted the judgment with appreciation, noting that the process ensured fairness and allowed the true majority to speak. He outlined his priorities soon after the decision became public, saying his first task would be to challenge several laws that he believes weaken oversight.
He said he would file Section 19 references challenging controversial legislation, including recent constitutional and financial amendments. He also highlighted plans to seek criminal prosecutions for leaders implicated in procurement fraud and money laundering, and to reveal corruption within Connect PNG.
Mr Nomane said the Opposition must now focus its energy on providing alternative leadership while preparing for the vote of no confidence scheduled for December. “The Opposition’s primary goal is to depose the Marape government,” he said.
“As wezprepare for the Supreme Court to recall Parliament for a VONC… the time has come for new leadership in the Opposition – one that demonstrates courage, competence, and a thorough understanding of the responsibilities at hand.”
