PNG Budget Oversight Leaves Enga Hospital Without Funding, Says Ipatas

Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas has criticised the PNG 2026 Budget for overlooking the operational and capital needs of the newly built Enga Provincial Hospital, despite its significant construction cost.

Speaking yesterday, Sir Peter said he was surprised that a project valued at over K700 million received no allocation to purchase equipment or commence operations. He said he had already notified key leaders, including the Prime Minister, Health Minister and Treasurer. “I believe it may have been an oversight,” he said.

Sir Peter is calling for urgent corrective measures so the long-awaited hospital can open to the public in 2026. He revealed that 16 international specialists have joined the provincial health workforce in preparation for the facility’s rollout.

He noted that the Highlands region’s population demands stronger specialist services and the Enga Provincial Hospital is intended to shoulder part of that burden. “That’s why we are working closely with and liaising with the Government to ensure that the hospital gets its operational and capital works funding,” Sir Peter said.
