Speaking after the Joint Supervisory Body (JSB) meeting in Port Moresby on Wednesday, Mr Marape noted that both governments have endorsed a timetable that will guide the process leading up to the presentation of the referendum outcome.
The latest JSB session resulted in a joint resolution covering five agenda items, marking one of the final stages of the peace process.
At a joint press conference, the Prime Minister said the discussion set out a clear roadmap for the first six months of next year, including plans for a sittings order to bring the result to the floor of Parliament.
“We just completed a successful JSB meeting. We are in the final leg in which the referendum result will go to Parliament,” he said.
“We have agreed that the sessional order will be used to usher the results onto the floor of Parliament. The technical specifications of the secessional order as well as what happens on the floor of Parliament will be defined properly in the next three months.”
Mr Marape thanked Bougainvilleans for their patience over the long 24-year journey since the signing of the 2001 Peace Agreement and assured them the ratification process will be handled responsibly. “I want to thank Bougainville leaders and people – fear not, whatever happens. To the rest of the country, let us embrace this process as it is a must-do process that cannot be avoided,” he said.
