PNG, Cairns discuss direct Lae flights to boost tourism and trade
Papua New Guinea is exploring more direct flight connections between Lae and Cairns as part of efforts to strengthen ties with Australia’s Far North Queensland region. Prime Minister James Marape met with Cairns Lord Mayor Amy Eden yesterday to discuss ways to expand business, tourism, and labor mobility.
Marape said that improved air access would support PNG citizens traveling for work, business, and leisure, while also encouraging Australian tourists to visit PNG’s northern cities. He noted that current travel options are limited and that both governments are keen to find practical solutions.
The Prime Minister also suggested Cairns could act as a gateway for PNG workers participating in labor mobility programs, including a potential center to assist arrivals with orientation and preparation for living in Australia.
Mayor Eden welcomed the proposals, highlighting the strong presence of PNG communities in Cairns and their contribution to local society. She also mentioned exploring education and sports initiatives for PNG students, including links to local rugby league pathways.
Both leaders discussed a new PNG Friendship Garden in Cairns, featuring traditional totems to celebrate cultural connections and the long history shared between the two regions.
Marape confirmed that the PNG Government will follow up with relevant ministries to implement the discussed plans.
The meeting marked a new phase in PNG–Queensland collaboration, with both sides emphasizing mutual benefits for tourism, trade, and people-to-people engagement.
