PNG Opposition Leader pushes for end to sorcery-related killings
Papua New Guinea’s Opposition Leader, James Nomane, has urged the government to act immediately to stop sorcery accusation–related violence affecting communities nationwide.
In a statement this week, the Chuave MP said the violence has reached alarming levels in several provinces, with some reporting up to 200 cases, while national numbers are in the thousands. He said many more incidents go unreported, hiding the real human cost.
Nomane called SARV a “scourge” that undermines the nation’s values, warning that women and girls are the most vulnerable. “Culture is a source of identity, but it must never be weaponised to justify cruelty,” he said.

He said laws under the Criminal Code Amendment 2013 must be enforced, and provincial governments should be equipped to lead tailored programs. “Each province has its own unique culture. They must be resourced to act head-on, expand safe houses and fund awareness campaigns,” he said.
Mr Nomane acknowledged churches, NGOs, and community groups that have supported victims and raised awareness. He proposed a funding plan of 5 million kina per province to effectively combat SARV nationwide.
He urged Prime Minister James Marape to make ending sorcery-related violence part of his legacy. “Protect the most vulnerable in society and restore dignity to our nation,” he said.
